Break the Cycle Campaign
This past October, for Domestic Violence Awareness Month, PRESENT NOW launched its Break the Cycle Campaign, to join fellow shelter partners and advocates in the conversation about domestic violence. Because the topic is so difficult to comprehend, it often goes unspoken, which only perpetuates the issue.
As part of the campaign, PRESENT NOW dedicated resources toward breaking this silence by educating our followers on domestic violence. Through emails, social media, and video content, PRESENT NOW explained the following facts about domestic violence.

The abuse cycle includes three stages.
First, victims often sense tension from their abuser, as if they are “walking on eggshells.” That tension builds until the abuser commits an abusive act--whether psychological, emotional, verbal, physical, or sexual. The abuser then apologizes and promises to change, making the victim feel secured and assured. That is, until the tension starts to rise again. |
At PRESENT NOW, we are dedicated to supporting children affected by domestic violence--the silent survivors. Child victims often experience fear, guilt, shame, and powerlessness. They also undergo trauma bonding as a result of the abuse cycle.
In the cycle, abusive and loving behavior are closely linked. As a result, the child often confuses love and abuse.
In addition, children of domestic violence unconsciously choose their own role as a victim or as an abuser between the ages of 3 and 6. This is why PRESENT NOW's gifts are essential for a child's recovery. Our personalized presents display a pure form of love for our sheltered children, so that they can see from an early age that real love is possible, and that they are worthy of said love. We hope you learned and engaged in the conversation in October, and we hope you carry that conversation throughout the year!
