A Heartfelt Goodbye to Our Summer 2020 Intern - Emily Steiner

On June 15, PRESENT NOW welcomed back Emily Steiner as our Summer 2020 intern!

A Los Angeles native, Emily is a rising senior at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, class of 2021. She is in the School of Human Ecology, majoring in Human Development and Family Studies with a minor in Digital Studies. She was drawn to PRESENT NOW due to her interests in philanthropy, education, and digital media.

Emily has been an invaluable part of the PRESENT NOW Team. From learning the ins and outs of PRESENT NOW’s operations, to drafting communications with our supporters, to providing ideas and feedback, Emily has helped this summer run smoothly, even amongst uncertain times. Thank you, Emily!
Why did you want to intern at PRESENT NOW?

I wanted to intern at PRESENT NOW because I am passionate about making a positive impact in the lives of others within our community. Domestic violence is a very prevalent and rising problem throughout our country, and I think that it is important to have an understanding of the issue and the best ways to help support victims.

Being a Human Development and Family Studies major has given me the tools that I will need in order to successfully work in this field.
What have you learned during your internship?

The opportunity to intern at PRESENT NOW has allowed me to gain first-hand experience in working for and running a non-profit organization, specially a non-profit that is dedicated to supporting women and their children. I have learned the ins and outs of a non-profit organization on a day to day basis, how to organize and run a successful warehouse, how to conduct grant research, how to be a team member, how to manage volunteer programs, and so much more.

Has anything you have learned during your time at PRESENT NOW inspired what you would like to pursue in your life/career?

In terms of my professional goals and future career path, I plan on continuing my study in the field of social work by attending graduate school. By interning at PRESENT NOW, I have been able to learn more about non-profit organizations and how they partner with social work agencies around the state of California. For as long as I can remember, I have been very passionate about making positive social changes within my community, and it is my career aspiration to be involved in organizations that provide resources to families who are in need. At PRESENT NOW, I have been able to gain a better understanding of domestic violence within California and the various programs that are currently in place to support women and children survivors. I hope to one day be an advocate for individuals, families, and children who are in need of assistance. PRESENT NOW has given me the tools that I will need in order to eventually start my own non-profit organization.

What has been the most valuable part of your PRESENT NOW internship?

The most valuable part of this internship has been the opportunity to work so closely with Lilian and Marlena. From the very beginning, they have been so wonderful and excited about teaching me about their roles at PRESENT NOW and how PRESENT NOW operates. I have really enjoyed my weekly reflection meetings with Lilian, because I could take a step back to reflect on my progress and receive feedback from Lilian. It is not often that an intern receives the amount of one-on-one attention that I have received daily. This internship has been an important step in my career development, and I am so grateful for the opportunity that I have been given.
